America has a problem that is unfortunately getting worse every year. Childhood obesity is so prevalent in our society that one can’t go out in public and not see children carrying around excessive weight. Children that have a weight problem are susceptible to diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and high cholesterol. Childhood obesity has become a serious medical problem that finally local elementary schools are now taking action to combat this social condition. Schools are providing children with better food options. School breakfast and lunch programs are putting the emphasis on selecting foods low in fat while after school programs promoting exercise are filling up. Teachers volunteer their time monitoring classes in yoga, calisthenics, and aerobics.

So if you are a parent faced with a child that carries around excess weight start by putting your child on a diet and exercise plan that is sensible and can be shared by the entire family. The family that eats well and exercise together will be a family that will be happier and healthier. By doing so as a family your child won’t feel so isolated knowing that mom and dad are in it too. Take walks together. Get out and ride bikes. Or dedicate a room in the house as a place to exercise. Buy some home fitness equipment and encourage its use.
