The word pitchy has become a common house hold term in the last decade, in large part due to television shows like American Idol. Pitchy singing refers to being off pitch, either under pitch, or above pitch for extended periods of time. In some cases the problem is with a single note that is critical in the song, which makes the pitchy note stand out more. In other cases a singer may sustain a flat or sharp pitch over a long range of notes. The most common form of pitchy singing is to be somewhat under pitch, or flat, throughout a song.
There are few reliable remedies for pitchy singing, yet voice software for singing has recently shown to provide the most hope. With voice software for singing, the user incorporates ten minutes of their regular practice time to training with a specific goal of improving pitch. The visual graphic bio feedback of the software helps entrain the singer with minimal effort and results are noticeable within ten minutes. Significant sustained results occur within just a few weeks. The key to using this type of software is to focus on the basics, such as singing a single note. Next, the student graduates to simple short scales, then arpeggios, and longer scales in both major and minor key variations.

Until modern times voice pitch was a factor of close attention of the vocalist and a lot of luck. A singer was either born with good ability to hear their pitch, or they would not be successful as a singer. Unfortunately, many otherwise promising singers were cast aside, not because of lack of ability, but because they could not hear properly and therefore could not fine tune their vocal pitch. Due to technology of modern times more vocalists have opportunities to perform, but unfortunately most fail to avail themselves of advanced training and perpetuation the problems of bad voice pitch.
The good news is that singing pitch software can help train a vocalist to sing on pitch with minimal effort. The singer sings into a microphone that feeds into a computer than then graphs their pitch in real time. For unknown reasons, the real time feedback helps reinforce natural singing and within a few minutes singing pitch improves significantly. If a singer uses this technology a few times a week, overall singing pitch improves and stays solid. If the singer stops using this technology, with a few weeks, the old habits seem to return. More research is needed, but thus far it seems promising.
